AFP - Le film français muet "The Artist" a récolté mardi à Los Angeles une moisson historique de 10 nominations aux Oscars, notamment dans les catégories reines de meilleur film et meilleur acteur, seulement devancé par "Hugo Cabret" de Martin Scorsese, nommé 11 fois.

Après ses trois trophées aux Golden Globes, le film muet en noir et blanc écrit et réalisé par Michel Hazanavicius concourra pour les statuettes de meilleur film, scénario original, réalisation, acteur (Jean Dujardin), second rôle féminin (Bérénice Bejo), musique (Ludovic Bource), montage, costumes, photographie et décors.

"C'est d'abord un privilège, un honneur", a réagi Michel Hazanavicius. "Ca ressemble à un conte de fée pour ce film perçu au départ comme un film handicapé, sourd-muet, un vilain petit canard".

Aucun film français n'a amassé autant de nominations dans l'histoire des Oscars, qui se tiendront à Hollywood, au Kodak Theater le 26 février.

"Je ne sais plus quoi dire, je ne pensais pas qu'on en aurait autant...", a déclaré Jean Dujardin. "Dix nominations, c'est historique".

"The Artist" raconte l'histoire de George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), une star du muet sombrant dans l'oubli faute d'avoir embrassé l'avènement du cinéma parlant, et le destin contraire de la jeune actrice Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo), l'une de ses admiratrices à la gloire irrésistible.

Jeudi, aux États-Unis, les candidats à l'investiture républicaine ont débattu une dernière fois avant les primaires. Newt Gingrich, favori, a été la cible des critiques de ses rivaux, notamment à propos de son lobbying dans l'immobilier.

AFP - Newt Gingrich, le favori de la course à l'investiture républicaine pour affronter Barack Obama en 2012, a été jeudi au centre des critiques de plusieurs de ses rivaux qui lui ont reproché d'avoir fait du lobbying pour le géant du financement immobilier Freddie Mac.

La représentante Michel Bachmann a accusé Newt Gingrich d'avoir "perçu 1,6 million de dollars afin d'influencer des élus pour maintenir l'entourloupe", en faisant référence à l'argent que M. Gingrich a perçu de Freddie Mac, le géant du financement immobilier renfloué à coups de milliards par l'Etat au plus fort de la crise de 2008.

"Nous savons qu'il a touché des chèques de Freddie Mac, (...) plus d'1,6 million de dollars", a-t-elle insisté lors d'un débat organisé à Sioux City dans l'Iowa (centre) et retransmis par la chaîne Fox News.

La candidate ultraconservatrice a reproché à M. Gingrich de s'être livré à un "trafic d'influence en direction de responsables républicains à Washington".

Le Texan Ron Paul s'en est également pris aux activités de Gingrich liées à Freddie Mac, en expliquant que ce type de structures qui mêlent privé et public sont "ce qu'il y a de pire en matière d'économie".

"Certains disent même que cela mène aux extrêmes, au fascisme, parce que les grandes entreprises et le gouvernement finissent par se confondre", a-t-il dit.

Après les attaques de ses rivaux, Newt Gingrich a assuré: "Je n'ai jamais été lobbyiste quelles que soient les circonstances. (...) Je n'ai jamais changé d'opinion en raison d'une quelconque somme d'argent", a-t-il dit.

A l'époque, "j'étais une figure nationale (...) qui menait différentes activités, comme écrire des best-sellers, prononcer des discours", a-t-il expliqué. "J'ai choisi de ne travailler qu'avec des gens dont je partageais les valeurs", a-t-il affirmé, ajoutant que "faire en sorte que les gens puissent s'acheter une maison" était une valeur "cardinale en Amérique".

Newt Gingrich a été mis en cause durant la campagne pour avoir touché 1,6 million de dollars de Freddie Mac. L'intéressé assure qu'il n'a fait que facturer "des conseils stratégiques" à l'entreprise.

Il s'agissait du dernier grand débat républicain avant le début des primaires dans l'Iowa. L'organisation de caucus le 3 janvier dans cet Etat du centre marquera la toute première consultation dans le long processus mené Etat par Etat, qui s'étendra jusqu'à l'été, pour désigner un candidat républicain en vue d'affronter le président Barack Obama le 6 novembre 2012.

Le 1er décembre, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy était l'invitée de Nikos Aliagas sur Europe 1, à l'occasion de la Journée mondiale contre le sida. La première dame de France est en effet ambassadrice du Fonds mondial de lutte contre le sida, depuis le 1er décembre 2008. C'est une cause qui lui tient particulièrement à coeur car son frère Virginio est décédé le 4 juillet 2006 de cette maladie. C'est aussi un virus qu'elle a connu dans son ancien métier : "Lorsque j'étais encore mannequin, le monde de la mode a été vraiment touché", explique-t-elle. De quoi donner envie à l'épouse du président français de se battre sans relâche.

Au micro de l'animateur, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy a donc évoqué cette maladie qui ne cesse de progresser insidieusement : "En France, on estime quand même que 50 000 personnes ignorent qu'elles sont porteuses du VIH. C'est incroyable. Donc, il ne faut pas baisser la garde devant ce virus," explique-t-elle. Pour Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, cette journée de sensibilisation "est l'occasion de réveiller les consciences, de se rappeler que beaucoup de progrès ont été accomplis mais qu'il reste encore beaucoup à faire. Il faut rester alerté, rester attentif et dire aux jeunes de se protéger, de se faire dépister". Elle souhaite aussi vivement "banaliser les dépistages".

Ce que l'épouse de Nicolas Sarkozy souhaite aussi, c'est limiter la transmission de la mère à l'enfant. La maman d'Aurélien, 10 ans, et d'une petite Giulia, souhaite changer les mentalités : "Les femmes, notamment en Afrique et en Inde, ne sont pas informées, elles ont peur de se faire dépister, peur de prendre le traitement, peur d'être mises au ban de leur famille. À New York, les Indignés de Wall Street Seront Délogés Ultérieurement

La mairie de New York a annoncé que le nettoyage du parc, qu'occupent des centaines de manifestants, au cœur du quartier financier a été reporté. Depuis quatre semaines les indignés protestent contre les effets de la crise économique.

AFP - Les manifestants anti-Wall Street de New York ont obtenu vendredi une "victoire", la mairie annonçant un report du nettoyage du square qu'ils occupent depuis le 17 septembre au coeur du quartier financier.

La mairie de New York a précisé dans un communiqué que le propriétaire du square Zuccotti "reportait le nettoyage du parc" prévu vendredi, ce qui a suscité une immense clameur parmi les milliers de manifestants et sympathisants réunis tôt vendredi dans le parc.

"C'est une victoire pour nous", a déclaré à l'AFP Senia Barragan, une porte-parole du mouvement, ajoutant que "Occupy Wall Street" allait maintenant réfléchir "à la suite".
Des cris de joie ont fusé dans le parc, où certains manifestants avaient passé la nuit à nettoyer.

"Les gens unis, ne seront jamais vaincus", scandait la foule qui a applaudi à tout rompre l'annonce du report des opérations de nettoyage.

"Ce n'est que temporaire", a cependant souligné une manifestante qui n'avait pas dormi de la nuit, Zora Gusso.

Jeudi soir, Occupy wall Street (OWS) avait lancé sur son site internet un "appel urgent à agir pour éviter la fermeture forcée" du campement. "Rejoignez-nous à 06h00 vendredi, pour une défense non violente à l'expulsion", avait écrit le mouvement, qui depuis quatre semaines dénonce la cupidité de Wall Street et la corruption des 1% les plus riches.

Vendredi matin, des milliers de personnes, dont des militants syndicaux avaient convergé vers le square, au coeur du quartier financier de Wall Street.

Le square était entouré de barrières, la police présente mais discrète.

"Policiers, ne préféreriez vous pas arrêter un banquier? ", pouvait-on lire sur une pancarte. "Liberté de rassemblement", affirmait une autre.

Le propriétaire du square Zuccotti, Brookfield property, avait fait savoir jeudi qu'il allait nettoyer le square à partir de 07h00 vendredi , et demandé qu'en soit retiré tout ce qui y a été amassé depuis le 17 septembre par les manifestants qui dorment sur place.

Le commissaire de police de New York Ray Kelly avait précisé qu'une fois le nettoyage terminé -- prévu pour durer toute la journée de vendredi -- les manifestants pourraient y revenir, mais dans le respect du règlement de ce parc privé mais ouvert au public, c'est à dire "sans les sacs de couchage".

Les manifestants qui dorment en plein air avaient dénoncé une manoeuvre pour mettre fin à leur mouvement.

La diatribe anti-occidentale prononcée par le président iranien à la tribune des Nations unies a conduit les représentants américains ainsi que la délégation de l'Union européenne à quitter l'Assemblée générale de l'ONU.

AFP - Les délégations américaine et de l'Union européenne ont quitté jeudi la salle où se tient l'Assemblée générale de l'ONU à New York, lors du discours du président iranien Ahmadinejad qui s'est livré à une nouvelle diatribe anti-américaine et anti-occidentale.

La délégation américaine est partie au moment où le président iranien a vivement condamné le rôle des Etats-Unis dans les guerres et dans la crise financière, demandant aussi aux principales puissances occidentales de payer des réparations pour l'esclavage.

Les délégations de l'Union européenne se sont ensuite levées à leur tour, d'un commun accord, en signe de protestation, lorsque le chef de l'Etat iranien s'en est pris aux Européens.

"Il s'agissait d'une position coordonnée de l'UE lorsque le président iranien a mis en cause les pays européens pour leur +soutien au sionisme+ et fait référence à l'Holocauste", a indiqué à l'AFP la mission française auprès de l'ONU, qualifiant le discours d'"inacceptable".

"Si des pays européens utilisent toujours l'Holocauste après six décennies comme excuse pour payer leur amende aux Sionistes, les puissances coloniales et les esclavagistes ne devraient-ils pas payer des réparations aux nations affectées?", a déclaré M. Ahmadinejad.

"Mad Men" et "Modern Family" Indétrônables aux Emmy Awards 2011

"Mad Men" et "Modern Family" ont confirmé dimanche qu'ils étaient les rois incontestés de la télévision américaine, en remportant cette année encore les prestigieux Emmys Awards des meilleures séries dramatique et comique, remis à Los Angeles.

"Mad Men" (diffusée sur la chaîne câblée AMC), dont c'est la quatrième victoire consécutive -- un trophée pour chacune de ses saisons -- a néanmoins échoué à offrir à son très populaire acteur principal Jon Hamm l'Emmy du meilleur acteur dramatique, qui est allé à Kyle Chandler pour "Friday Night Lights", une série sur les aventures d'une équipe de football texane.

La victoire pour la deuxième année consécutive de "Modern Family" (ABC) dans la catégorie "comédie" était dans l'air après un démarrage en fanfare, qui a vu la série remporter les quatre premiers trophée de la soirée (seconds rôles comiques féminin et masculin, réalisation et scénario).

Côté comique, Jim Parsons a remporté son deuxième Emmy consécutif de meilleur acteur pour "The Big Bang Theory", tandis que Melissa McCarthy a été désignée meilleure actrice pour "Mike & Molly".

Le grand perdant de la soirée est sans conteste "Mildred Pierce" HBO) de Todd Haynes, favori dans la catégorie des mini-séries, mais qui a dû s'incliner devant "Downtown Abbey" (PBS) et son portrait d'une famille britannique avant la première guerre mondiale.

Meilleure mini-série de l'année, "Downtown Abbey" est aussi reparti avec les Emmys du scénario, du second rôle féminin et de la meilleure réalisation.

"Mildred Pierce" et son portrait de mère courage pendant la Grande Dépression a offert à la Britannique Kate Winslet le trophée de la meilleure actrice dans une mini-série, une distinction qu'elle a dédiée à sa mère.

Retransmise depuis le Nokia Theater à Los Angeles, la cérémonie, animée par Jane Lynch, l'une des stars de la série musicale "Glee", avait débuté avec un petit film musical empreint d'ironie, à la gloire de la télévision.

"La télévision est un monde merveilleux, le royaume de la joie. Il n'y a rien comme la télévision", a chanté Jane Lynch sur une musique de conte de fées, en traversant les plateaux de plusieurs séries populaires.

L'une des surprises de la soirée a été l'apparition surprise de l'acteur américain Charlie Sheen, débarqué de la série "Mon oncle Charlie" en début d'année après avoir copieusement insulté son producteur.

"Je veux prendre un moment pour dire quelque chose qui me vient du coeur à tous les gens ici qui travaillent sur +Mon Oncle Charlie+", a-t-il déclaré dans un évident signe d'apaisement, après ses mutliples frasques.

Plus de 46 Millions d'Américains Vivaient "dans la Pauvreté" en 2010

Plus de 15 % de la population américaine vivait, en 2010, sous le seuil de pauvreté, selon un rapport annuel du Bureau du recensement. Un taux que les États-Unis n'avaient plus atteint depuis 1993.

AFP - La pauvreté a fortement progressé aux Etats-Unis en 2010 sous l'effet de la persistance de la crise économique, selon des données publiées mardi par le Bureau du recensement américain, qui ne donnent qu'un aperçu partiel de la misère dans le pays.

Le taux de personnes vivant sous le seuil de pauvreté a grimpé de 0,8 point par rapport à 2009 pour s'établir à 15,1%, son plus haut niveau depuis 1993, indique le rapport annuel sur la pauvreté et les salaires de cette émanation du gouvernement.

En termes absolus, 46,2 millions de personnes vivaient "dans la pauvreté" en 2010, ce qui correspond au plus haut niveau relevé depuis 52 ans que le Bureau du recensement publie ces chiffres.

Le rapport précise que le seuil de pauvreté correspondait en 2010 à un revenu annuel de 22.314 dollars (environ 16.400 euros) pour un foyer comptant quatre personnes.

Le taux de pauvreté ne donne toutefois qu'un aperçu partiel de la misère aux Etats-Unis: le Bureau du recensement le calcule en effet en faisant le rapport du nombre de pauvres âgés de plus de 15 ans à la population totale du pays, alors que d'autres statistiques montrent qu'un nombre croissant d'enfants dépendent de l'aide alimentaire de l'Etat.

Les attaques contre les tours de New York et le Pentagone ont-elles marqué la naissance d'une ère nouvelle ? Le monde a-t-il changé de bases parce qu'une poignée de terroristes a commis un des raids les plus audacieux de l'histoire contemporaine ? A voir le nombre de publications consacrées à l'événement, on serait tenté de le croire. Et pourtant...

Ces attentats ont d'abord ébranlé l'Amérique, et certains ont pu affirmer que, après la chute du mur de Berlin, on allait assister à un retour d'autant plus remarqué des Etats-Unis que leur puissance militaire est alors à nulle autre pareille : à eux seuls, ils représentent un peu moins de la moitié des dépenses d'armement dans le monde. Les rapides succès en Afghanistan et en Irak ont corroboré ces analyses. Dix ans après, « la guerre contre le terrorisme », qui visait à éradiquer toute menace, y compris celle des Etats dénoncés comme « voyous », est un échec, et la rhétorique belliciste de Washington s'est atténuée. Les Etats-Unis devraient se retirer d'Irak d'ici à la fin de l'année, laissant derrière eux un pays détruit, avec un gouvernement divisé et corrompu, qui sera plus proche de Téhéran que de Washington. En Afghanistan, malgré les déclarations lénifiantes, la montée en puissance des talibans apparaît irrésistible, tandis que le Pakistan s'enfonce dans la crise. Quant à Al-Qaida, si son chef Oussama Ben Laden et nombre de ses hauts dirigeants ont été tués, elle a essaimé au Maghreb, au Yémen, au Nigeria, etc.

Le prix de ces guerres, avant tout payé par les peuples qui en ont été les victimes, pèse aussi sur les Etats-Unis et plus largement sur l'Occident, de deux manières. Elles ont permis une remise en cause des libertés au nom de la lutte contre le terrorisme, légalisé la torture, les enlèvements, les écoutes illégales, les assassinat ciblés, etc., pratiques qui se sont étendues malgré l'élection du président Barack Obama, comme le montre le maintien du bagne de Guantanamo ou l'utilisation sans restriction de drones.

Le terrorisme est devenu un concept attrape-tout permettant aux Etats de justifier leur politique de répression (...)

La côte Est Compte ses Morts Après le Passage de la Tempête Irène

La tempête Irène, qui déferle actuellement sur l'est du Canada, a provoqué la mort de plusieurs dizaines de personnes aux États-Unis. La Nouvelle-Angleterre et le Vermont, notamment, ont été particulièrement touchés par les intempéries.

AFP - La tempête Irene a quitté lundi les Etats-Unis pour le Canada, après avoir fait des dizaines de morts et provoqué de nombreuses inondations qui ont particulièrement affecté le Vermont, petit Etat frontalier du Canada.

"Il va nous falloir du temps pour nous remettre d'une tempête de cette magnitude", a déclaré le président Barack Obama. "Nous en ressentons encore les effets dans de nombreuses parties du pays, notamment en Nouvelle Angleterre et dans le Vermont, où il y a eu énormément d'inondations", a-t-il dit.

Selon des sources officielles et des médias locaux, au moins 38 personnes sont mortes dans 11 Etats, dont six à New-York, six dans le New Jersey et six en Caroline du Nord.
Dans le New Jersey notamment, une automobiliste de 20 ans a été retrouvée morte, plusieurs heures après avoir appelé son petit ami et la police, pour leur dire qu'elle avait de l'eau jusqu'au cou dans sa voiture engloutie par une brusque montée des eaux sur une route du comté de Salem.

Dans le Vermont, petit Etat rural et montagneux de 600.000 habitants, des ponts ont été emportés, des centaines de routes coupées, rendant impossible l'accès à certains villages, a constaté un correspondant de l'AFP.

"Nous n'avons pas vu de telles inondations dans le Vermont depuis 75 ans", a déclaré le gouverneur de l'Etat Peter Shumlin. "Les gens souffrent beaucoup".

Le bourg de West Brattleboro, 3.000 habitants, ressemblait lundi à une vaste plage de sable encombrée de cailloux et de débris, après le retrait des eaux.

La Pauvreté Touche de Plus en Plus de Français

En 2009, le France comptait 8,2 millions de pauvres, selon l’enquête sur les niveaux de vie publiée mardi par l'Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques (Insee). Ce sont près de 340 000 personnes en plus par rapport à 2008 qui sont tombées sous le seuil de pauvreté, qui s’établit en 2009 à 954 euros mensuels, soit 60% du revenu médian français, selon l’Insee.

Pour la première fois depuis 2005, les foyers les plus modestes ont, en outre, enregistré une baisse de leur niveau de vie contrairement à celui des 60% de Français les plus aisés qui a continué à augmenter. Un constat accablant que l’Insee met sur le compte de la crise et de l’augmentation du chômage, qui a touché plus durement les populations les plus fragiles. Des explications qui ne manquent pas de soulever quelques questions.

La grande méchante crise ? Nul doute qu'en France la crise économique de 2008 a eu pour effet un accroissement du nombre de personnes sans emploi. Pour preuve, entre 2003 et 2008, le taux de chômage est passé de 8,5% à 7,4% avant d’atteindre 9,1% en 2009, selon les chiffres de l’Insee. Pour autant, la crise ne peut à elle seule expliquer l’augmentation du nombre de pauvres en 2009. Les précédentes récessions que la France a traversées, à savoir les deux chocs pétroliers dans les années 70 et l’explosion de la bulle Internet en 2001, n’ont en rien été suivies par une augmentation du nombre de personnes vivant sous le seuil de pauvreté. "Les effets de cette crise sont accentués par les politiques de réduction des impôts et de gel des prestations sociales menées depuis un dizaine d’années", déplore Noam Leandri, secrétaire général de l’Observatoire des inégalités, contacté par FRANCE 24.

Succéder à Steve Jobs : la tâche est ardue tant le nom d’Apple semble indissociable de celui de son co-fondateur. Tim Cook a pourtant pris officiellement mercredi la tête de l’une des plus célèbres entreprises américaines au monde.

"Je recommande fortement que nous mettions en œuvre notre plan de succession et nommions Tim Cook, PDG d’Apple", a écrit Steve Jobs dans sa lettre de démission pour raison de santé.
C’est donc adoubé par le père des iPods, iPhones et autres "itechnologies" que Tim Cook passe du poste de directeur opérationnel à celui de grand maître de la maison Apple.

Âgé de 50 ans, l’homme a déjà fait tourner la machine Apple et occupé le poste de PDG par intérim. Entre janvier et juin 2009, c’est lui qui remplace Steve Jobs lorsque celui-ci doit subir une transplantation du foie pour guérir son cancer du pancréas.

De même lorsque le co-fondateur prend de nouveau du repos pour raison de santé en janvier 2011, c’est encore lui qui est choisi.

Aurélie et ses colocataires ne pensaient pas que leur salade en sachet estampillée "bio" serait si...fraîche: au fond du saladier, le petit groupe a découvert une grenouille vivante de la taille d'un gros pouce.

"On a ouvert le sachet acheté ce soir en grande surface, un mélange de jeunes pousses bio, on l'a versé dans le saladier, on a commencé à manger mais on s'est rendus compte qu'au fond du bol il y avait une grenouille à moitié vivante", a raconté mardi soir à l'AFP Aurélie Grebent, 29 ans, commerçante à Charenton-le-Pont (Val-de-Marne).

D'après la jeune femme, le petit batracien fait "bien six ou sept centimètres".
"On a alerté le centre anti-poison, on risque une bonne gastro", a-t-elle raconté, ajoutant qu'il n'était "pas question de manger le deuxième sachet qui reste dans le frigo".
L'infortunée a déclaré qu'elle se plaindrait auprès de l'entreprise commercialisant ces salades vertes prêtes à l'emploi.
On ignorait le sort réservé à la grenouille.

À 30 ans, le géant chinois de la NBA (2,29 m) Yao Ming a annoncé la fin d’une carrière programmée avant même sa naissance. Né le 12 septembre 1980 à Shanghai, le "petit" Yao est avant tout l’aboutissement d’une politique eugénique lancée par le père de la révolution chinoise, Mao Zedong. Son but était de mettre en place une génération de sportifs parfaits, qui deviendraient les symboles d’une Chine conquérante dans le monde sportif.

À l’âge de 15 ans, sa mère, Dan Fang, est rapidement repérée par les autorités qui voient en elle une championne potentielle de basket. C’est avant tout sa taille (1,88 m) qui les attire. Dan aurait préféré une "carrière dans la chanson", avoue-t-elle au magazine américain du Time en 2005, mais son destin se décidera un ballon de basket à la main. Elle rejoint dans les années 1960 le centre d’entrainement de Shanghai, où elle devient une joueuse importante de l’effectif, avant de connaître la Révolution culturelle (1966-1969) à laquelle elle participe activement.

Pour la dixième édition de la manifestation Paris-Plages, les bords de Seine se métamorphosent en station balnéaire éphémère du 21 juillet au 21 août, tout comme les abords du bassin de la Villette.

C’est sous une pluie intermittente que l'aménagement de la rive droite de la Seine s’est poursuivi, ce lundi, avec l’installation d’une plage sur une partie de la voie Georges-Pompidou. Soit un kilomètre de sable en continu depuis le quai du Louvre jusqu’au pont d’Arcole.

"Dix fois plus de sable"

Près de 6 000 tonnes de sable, acheminées par l’entreprise Lafarge, ont été nécessaires pour créer l’illusion d’un bord de mer. Selon les organisateurs, dix fois plus de sable ont été utilisés que pour les éditions précédentes. C’est un convoi de 180 mètres de long, composé de six barges, qui a transporté par voie fluviale le sable fin en provenance de la carrière de Bernières, en aval de la Seine, en Normandie. "Une vingtaine de personnes participent ce lundi à l'installation et au déchargement du sable", explique Laurent Pointel, chef d'équipe du service port et maintenance au sein de l'entreprise Lafarge, présent ce matin sur le chantier de Paris-Plages (à écouter : l’entretien ci-dessous de Laurent Pointel).

AFP - Le Japon a créé une immense surprise en remportant son premier Mondial féminin, face aux Etats-Unis (3 tirs au but à 1, 2-2 a.p.), après être revenu deux fois au score, dimanche à Francfort.

Pour les Américaines, la défaite n'est "pas une option", avait expliqué l'attaquante Abby Wambach. Avec les Japonaises, deux fois assommées et deux fois ressuscitées, elles ont trouvé plus insubmersibles qu'elles.

Et lors de la séance de tirs au but, ce sont les Américaines, qui n'avaient pourtant jamais perdu face aux Japonaises (22 victoires et trois nuls), qui ont craqué, les trois premières frappeuses (Boxx, Lloyd et Heath) échouant face à Kaihori.

Tout dans le parcours des Japonaises dans ce Mondial relève de la surprise.
Elles n'étaient favorites ni en quarts de finale face à l'Allemagne (1-0 a.p.), ni en demi-finale face à la Suède (3-1).

Mais les voir revenir au score par deux fois face à une équipe américaine dominatrice et qui a touché trois fois les montants - Rapinoe (18), Wambach (29) et Morgan (49) - tenait quasiment du miracle.

Après la très logique ouverture du score par Morgan (69), il fallait une énorme incompréhension au sein de la charnière centrale américaine, incapable de dégager un ballon pourtant facile, pour que Miyama, de près, fusille Hope Solo.

En prolongation, on pensait que le but de Wambach (104), qui avait déjà sauvé les Etats-Unis en quarts de finale face au Brésil, en marquant, déjà de la tête, le but du 2-2 dans les arrêts de jeu de la prolongation, suffirait.

Pas du tout. A trois minutes du terme, Sawa surgissait sur corner pour tromper à nouveau Solo et finir meilleure buteuse du Mondial, avec cinq buts.

La sélection Nadeshiko (du nom d'une fleur) n'avait jamais dépassé les quarts de finale en Coupe du Monde. Tout au long de leur invraisemblable parcours, les partenaires de Sawa ont rappelé qu'elles jouaient aussi pour soutenir un pays frappé par le séisme et le tsunami du mois de mars.
Longtemps décevante sur le terrain, la finale est devenue folle en prolongation. Mais dans les tribunes pleines de la Commerzbank Arena (48.817 spectateurs), elle a été dès le coup d'envoi à l'image de tout le tournoi, festive et animée par les supporteurs des deux camps.

AFP - Entre 500.000 et un million de personnes ont assisté jeudi soir au concert gratuit organisé par SOS Racisme sur le Champ-de-Mars à Paris, puis au feu d'artifice du 14 juillet, ont constaté des journalistes de l'AFP.

500.000 spectateurs, selon la Préfecture de Police, se sont rassemblées sur le Champ de Mars pour le concert, qui a duré plus de quatre heures. Ils étaient 8.000 sur le Trocadéro pour assister au feu d'artifice, qui a commencé vers 23H00 et a duré plus d'une demi-heure.
Ce spectacle pyrotechnique a été tiré depuis le pont d'Iéna et les jardins du Trocadéro avec, pour cette année, un thème dédié aux "Comédies musicales, de Broadway à Paris", ont annoncé les organisateurs. Il a été conçu par David Proteau.

"J'avais entendu parler du feu d'artifice à Paris, c'est merveilleux, c'est un spectacle magique, on est heureux d'assister à ce spectacle stupéfiant", s'est réjouie Katya Koversyuk, une touriste russe traduisant le sentiment général de sa famille.

"Ca fait plaisir de voir du monde heureux célébrer le 14 juillet, de voir tous ces gens qui font la fête comme ça", a déclaré à l'AFP Hocine Seddik, un jeune Algérien de 28 ans de Béjaïa, en vacances en France.

AFP - Le réseau social sur internet LinkedIn, destiné aux relations professionnelles, s'est hissé en juin à la deuxième place du secteur aux Etats-Unis, derrière Facebook mais devant MySpace, talonné par le site de microblogs Twitter, selon une étude ComScore publiée vendredi.

En juin LinkedIn a enregistré 33,9 millions de visiteurs uniques (+1,5% en un mois), très loin derrière Facebook (160,9 millions de visiteurs uniques, +2,3%), mais juste devant MySpace (33,5 millions de visiteurs -4%)).

Twitter, qui a enregistré la croissance la plus rapide (+13,5%), a enregistré 30,6 millions de visiteurs.

ComScore a indiqué que les chiffres mondiaux n'étaient pas encore disponibles pour juin.
Facebook, qui pourrait entrer en Bourse l'année prochaine, Twitter, qui est soupçonné de vouloir en faire de même, et LinkedIn, coté depuis le mois de mai, comptent parmi les valeurs les plus en vue actuellement des hautes technologies.

En revanche MySpace, qui fut longtemps premier sur le segment, vient d'être cédé à un prix dérisoire, estimé par la presse américaine dans la trentaine de millions de dollars, par le groupe de médias News Corp. qui l'avait acquis à prix d'or (580 millions de dollars) en 2005.

AFP - Les premières images du film de Woody Allen "Midnight in Paris" avec la Première dame de France Carla Bruni-Sarkozy en guest star ont été mises en ligne mardi par le site du mensuel Premiere.fr.

La bande-annonce du film, qui sera projeté en ouverture du Festival de Cannes le 11 mai, dure deux minutes sur fond d'accordéon et présente Mme Bruni-Sarkozy accueillant des touristes dans les jardins du musée Rodin, dont elle joue un guide.

En jean, veste et tee-shirt clairs, "Carla" apparaît deux secondes à peine en compagnie du couple formé par Owen Wilson et Rachel McAdams dont le film suit les démêlés aigrelets à la faveur de ce voyage "so romantic".

La courte-séquence est montée comme un clip à la gloire de la capitale, faisant défiler les quais de Seine et les voies sur berge, la place Vendôme, le pont d'Iéna, les Champs-Elysées et l'Arc de triomphe "by night", ainsi que quelques lieux emblématiques où furent tournées des scènes du film l'été dernier, tels le restaurant le Grand Véfour ou l'hôtel Meurice.

AFP - La France va contrôler la sûreté de "toutes (ses) centrales" nucléaires pour que "chacune puisse tirer les enseignements" de l'accident de la centrale japonaise de Fukushima, a déclaré mardi la ministre de l'Ecologie, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet.

"L'accident, peut-être la catastrophe, de Fukushima, sera l'occasion d'un retour d'expérience (...). Nous reverrons toutes les centrales, une à une, pour que chacune puisse tirer les enseignements de Fukushima", a dit la ministre lors de la séance des questions à l'Assemblée nationale.

Elle a affirmé que "toute crise, tout accident" était "l'occasion de revoir la sûreté de nos centrales", rappelant que tout le parc des centrales de l'Hexagone avait ainsi été contrôlé après la tempête de Noël 1999 pour s'assurer qu'il puisse faire face à un risque d'inondation.

Alcool et drogue au volant, grands excès de vitesse, conduite sans permis : le retour des mauvaises habitudes des automobilistes français semble se confirmer, avec l'annonce mercredi d'une flambée depuis le début de l'année des infractions routières les plus graves.

Chiffre le plus frappant, le nombre de grands excès de vitesse (50 km/h ou plus au-dessus de la limite autorisée) constatés en janvier et février a explosé (+55,75%) par rapport aux deux premiers mois de 2010, passant de 1.514 à 2.358 faits, indique mercredi dans son bilan mensuel l'Observatoire national de la délinquance et des réponses pénales (ONDRP).

Sur la même période, les "conduites sous l'emprise de l'alcool et/ou de produits stupéfiants" ont augmenté de 16,42% (32.093, Contre 27.567 l'an dernier). Concernant la conduite sans permis, l'augmentation est de 19,16% (de 13.636 faits en janvier-février 2010 à 16.249 faits en 2011).

Cette très nette dégradation intervient juste après un assouplissement des règles du permis à point, définitivement adopté par le Parlement début février, qui exclut pourtant les délits les plus graves.

La réforme avait été dénoncée avec virulence par les associations de victimes et de sécurité routière, qui prédisaient dès l'automne dernier qu'elle entraînerait une dégradation rapide du comportement routier des Français.

"Notre poison Quotidien, comment l'industrie chimique empoisonne notre assiette", raconte Celle qui avait raflé de nombreux prix avec "Le Monde selon Monsanto", diffusé en 2008 sur plus de 20 chaînes.

Ca commence sur un film documentaire de 1964, où un père se plaint du pain aux monostéarates, des colorants dans le vin, des insecticides dans les pommes, de la viande élevée aux antibiotiques, des produits chimiques dans la salade...
"J'ai repris l'enquête", dit-elle, pour étudier, près de 50 ans après ce constat, où on en est : réglementation, liens entre maladies et produits chimiques qui "sont partout", insuffisances des instances de contrôle et de surveillance...

Les premiers à souffrir des effets de ce que l'on appelle élégamment les produits phytosanitaires sont bien sûr les agriculteurs, chez qui les intoxications aiguës ne sont pas rares. "Chaque année, selon l'OMS, 1 à 3 millions sont victimes d'intoxication aiguë par pesticides, plus de 200.000 en meurent", dit la journaliste.

La France est le premier utilisateur européen de pesticides.

La Marée Noire Atteint les Côtes de Louisiane

La nappe de pétrole provoquée par l'explosion d'une plateforme dans le golfe du Mexique a atteint dans la nuit les côtes de Louisiane, laissant présager l'une des pires marées noires de l'histoire des Etats-Unis, où elle est déclarée catastrophe nationale.

Avec 800.000 litres de pétrole s'échappant chaque jour du puits de pétrole creusé pare la plateforme qui a sombré le 22 avril, la catastrophe pourrait dépasser en ampleur celle de l'Exxon Valdez, la pire de l'histoir amécaine, 1989 au large de l'Alaska.

Quatre ans après avoir été acquitté pour attouchements sur mineur, le "roi de la pop" devrait annoncer, ce jeudi, une série de nouveaux concerts à Londres. Des dates qui permettraient à la star d'éponger une partie de ses dettes.

Le roi de la pop Michael Jackson devrait annoncer jeudi une série de concerts à Londres qui marquerait son retour sur la scène quatre ans après son acquittement en 2005 à l'issue d'un procès où il était accusé d'attouchements sur un garçon de 13 ans.

L'organisateur de concerts AEG Live a convoqué une conférence de presse à 16H00 GMT à laquelle doit participer le chanteur dans la salle de l'O2 Arena, d'une capacité de 20.000 spectateurs, sans fournir de détails.

Wall Street et Les Bourses Européennes Plongent

Après la baisse sensible des marchés asiatiques, Wall Street connaît un repli historique puisque le Dow Jones est passé sous la barre des 7 000 points. Les Bourses européennes plongent à la clôture, à l'image du CAC 40 qui finit à - 4,48 %

Les principaux marchés boursiers européens étaient en nette baisse lundi matin, sous l'effet de la méfiance à l'égard des valeurs bancaires après l'annonce par le géant britannique HSBC de piètres résultats en 2008 et d'une augmentation de capital massive.

A 08h37 GMT, le Footsie-100, l'indice vedette de la Bourse de Londres, cédait 136,09 points, soit 3,55% par rapport à la clôture de vendredi, à 3.694 points

A Paris, le CAC 40 cédait à 09H10 (08H10 GMT) 2,52% à 2.634,46 points.

A la Bourse de Francfort, l'indice allemand vedette Dax perdait 3,21% à 3.720,17 points vers 8H30 GMT, tiré vers le bas par les valeurs financières.

A Milan, l'indice vedette SP/Mib cédait 3% à 14.824 points.

Explosifs au Printemps, Une Revendication Exige le Retrait Français d'Afghanistan

Cinq bâtons de dynamite sans système de mise à feu ont été découverts mardi matin au magasin Le Printemps, dans le centre de Paris, à l'endroit précis indiqué dans une revendication parvenue le matin même à l'AFP exigeant le retrait des troupes françaises d'Afghanistan d'ici la fin février 2009.

Cette lettre de revendication signée du "Front Révolutionnaire Afghan", un groupe jusqu'alors inconnu des services de renseignements français, postée du bureau de Paris-Villette et tamponnée lundi à 18H00, est parvenue entre 08H00 et 09H00 à l'Agence France-Presse.

Le président Nicolas Sarkozy a appelé à "la vigilance" et la "fermeté" face au terrorisme, tout en soulignant qu'il fallait être prudent après la découverte des explosifs au Printemps.

En plusieurs occasions, les derniers jours de la course à la Maison blanche ont réservé des surprises et influé sur l'issue du scrutin, faisant pencher les indécis dans un camp ou dans l'autre.
D'ici mardi, le jour du vote, et alors qu'Obama est donné en tête par les sondages, un renversement de tendance paraît peu vraisemblable mais n'est pourtant pas à exclure catégoriquement.
"Le dernier week-end peut être quelque chose de bien étrange dans une campagne présidentielle", explique Steven Schier, politologue au Carleton College, dans le Minnesota.
"Les électeurs qui ne se sont pas jusqu'alors intéressés à la campagne dressent enfin l'oreille et les indécis font leur choix. Oui, des choses étranges peuvent se passer."
En 2004, le chef d'Al Qaïda, Oussama ben Laden, s'était invité dans la campagne en diffusant une nouvelle vidéo qui avait rappelé aux Américains la tragédie du 11 septembre 2001.
La candidat démocrate John Kerry, alors au coude-à-coude avec George W. Bush dans les sondages, avait vu la course lui échapper dans les derniers jours de campagne. Pour lui, la cassette de Ben Laden avait largement contribué à ce phénomène en réveillant les craintes de l'électorat.
Jeudi, Abou yahya al Libi, l'un des principaux chefs de l'organisation radicale islamiste, a souhaité l'"humiliation" de Bush et des républicains le jour du scrutin dans une vidéo mise en ligne sur internet, sans prendre parti pour un quelconque camp politique.
En 2000, le jeudi précédant le scrutin, apparaissait une nouvelle peu flatteuse pour Bush - il avait été arrêté pour conduite en état d'ivresse en 1976, alors qu'il était gouverneur du Texas, et avait fait en sorte que cette incartade ne soit pas rendue publique.
CETTE ANNÉE, LA CRISE FINANCIÈRE
Sa mince avance dans les sondages sur le démocrate Al Gore avait fondu et le résultat du scrutin fut si serré qu'il fallut une décision du collège électoral, après un nouveau dépouillement des voix en Floride, pour donner la victoire au candidat républicain.
Les enquêtes d'opinion avaient montré que la révélation du "faux pas" de Bush en 1976 avait entraîné une remontée de Gore dans les derniers jours de la campagne.
Jusqu'ici, aucune "surprise d'octobre" n'est venue brouiller les cartes, comme ce fut le cas en 1980 avec l'échec des négociations pour la libération des otages américains à Téhéran, juste avant que le démocrate Jimmy Carter ne soit battu par Ronald Reagan.
En 1968, le président démocrate Lyndon Johnson avait ordonné l'arrêt des bombardements sur le Nord-Viêtnam une semaine avant le scrutin. Cette mesure n'avait pourtant pas suffi pour que le candidat du "parti de l'âne", le vice-président Hubert Humphrey, l'emporte face au républicain Richard Nixon.
La seule surprise cette année - et de taille - a été la crise financière qui a éclaté en septembre, mauvaise nouvelle pour l'équipe sortante et qui a encore accentué l'avance d'Obama dans les sondages.
Durant le week-end, les deux candidats vont poursuivre leur marathon dans des Etats où le duel s'annonce serré, comme l'Ohio, la Floride, le Missouri et le Colorado. La dernière ligne droite.
Les derniers sondages en date accordent entre trois et huit points d'avance à Obama sur son rival. Une enquête de Fox News publiée jeudi donne trois points d'avance au candidat démocrate, contre neuf points la semaine dernière. Mais six pour cent des personnes interrogées n'ont toujours pas fait leur choix.
"Il y a encore beaucoup d'indécis qui ne se prononceront qu'au dernier moment. Et les péripéties des derniers jours peuvent vraiment décider de l'issue du scrutin en cas de duel serré", souligne Steven Schier.

Cette action intervient au moment où un Mayennais comparaissait jeudi pour "offense au chef de l'Etat" devant le tribunal correctionnel de Laval, pour avoir brandi une affichette "Casse toi, pauv'con" au passage du président en août.
L'objet du litige devant le TGI de Paris est une petite poupée bleue de 20 centimètres de hauteur et l'affaire sera plaidée vendredi à 15H00.
Depuis le 9 octobre, la maison d'édition K&B commercialise un coffret contenant cette poupée, un lot de 12 aiguilles, ainsi qu'un ouvrage de 56 pages intitulé "Nicolas Sarkozy, le manuel vaudou".
Outre une biographie humoristique de M. Sarkozy, le manuel propose "un grand nombre de sortilèges magiques" et invite le lecteur à planter des aiguilles sur la poupée à son effigie.
Au coffret bleu Nicolas Sarkozy, tiré à 20.000 exemplaires et vendu 12,95 euros, répond un coffret rouge Ségolène Royal, tiré à 12.000 exemplaires.
Sur les poupées représentant M. Sarkozy figurent des inscriptions faisant référence à des épisodes ou des formules controversés de son parcours politique, comme le mot "racaille" dont M. Sarkozy avait qualifié des jeunes de banlieues défavorisées, ou encore le "Casse-toi pauv'con" lancé au salon de l'Agriculture à un homme qui avait refusé de lui serrer la main.
Sur celles de Mme Royal sont inscrits "Vive le Québec libre" ou "Justice chinoise", allusions à des déclarations controversées de la socialiste sur la "souveraineté" de la province canadienne ou sur la "rapidité" de la justice chinoise.
Plutôt amusée, l'ex-candidate PS à la présidentielle n'a pas jugé bon de poursuivre l'éditeur. "Ca reste ludique, et je pense qu'il faut quand même garder le sens de l'humour", a-t-elle déclaré mardi sur RTL, voyant dans ce commerce "la rançon de la notoriété".
"Ségolène Royal a bien ri et donc le mauvais sort est conjuré!", a renchéri jeudi son avocat, Me Jean-Pierre Mignard, confirmant ne pas vouloir saisir la justice.
Nicolas Sarkozy lui a pris l'affaire au sérieux. Dès le 16 octobre, son avocat, Me Thierry Herzog, a adressé un courrier à la société Tear Prod, dont dépendent les éditions K&B, réclamant le retrait de ces poupées.
Face au silence de l'entreprise, le chef de l'Etat l'a assignée pour "violation du droit à l'image". Il réclame le retrait de la poupée et demande à Tear Prod, en redressement judiciaire depuis mars, un euro symbolique.
Jeudi, les éditions K&B relativisaient la chose. Dans un communiqué, elles évoquaient la réaction mesurée de Mme Royal et estimaient les demandes de M. Sarkozy "totalement disproportionnées compte tenu de l'aspect ludique et humoristique du Manuel".
Nicolas Sarkozy est le premier chef de l'Etat français à aller en justice pour des atteintes à son image et à sa vie privée.
La première remonte à février. Il avait alors gagné un procès contre la compagnie aérienne Ryanair qui avait publié, à des fins publicitaires, sans autorisation, une photo de son couple.
Le même mois, il avait déposé une plainte contre le Nouvel Observateur pour l'évocation d'un SMS prétendument adressé à son ex-épouse Cecilia. La plainte a été retirée après des excuses du journaliste.
Dernier affaire en date: une plainte pour "dénonciation calomnieuse" contre Yves Bertrand, ex-patron des RG, après la publication d'extraits de ses "carnets" dans la presse.

Ana Ivanovic est toujours en convalescence... psychologique. Sans résultat depuis sa victoire à Roland-Garros, la jeune Serbe, N.5 mondiale, est tombée dès son entrée en lice au 2e tour du tournoi de Moscou face à Dominika Cibulkova en trois manches. Sans nul doute l'une des révélations de l'année, la Slovaque a mis 2h30 pour faire vaciller l'ex-N.1 mondiale pour réaliser sa seconde meilleure performance de la saison, deux mois après avoir battu Jelena Jankovic, alors N.2, en quart de finale à Montréal.
Pourtant à l'aise au service (12 aces et 58% de premières balles), Ivanovic a eu l'occasion de plier le match lors du troisième set qu'elle a mené 5-3. En face, Cibulkova a commis 9 doubles fautes (contre 5 pour son adversaire) et aucun ace. Son salut est venu de la défense des balles de break que s'est procurées Ivanovic : sur ses seize occasions, la Serbe n'en a converti que cinq... Après une manche partout, c'est un jeu décisif qui a départagé les deux jeunes joueuses : si Ivanovic a fait la course en tête, c'est Cibulkova qui a finalement pris l'ascendant en concluant le match 7 points à 4 sur une faute directe de la Serbe en coup droit.
Pour Ivanovic, son chemin de croix se poursuit. Depuis Wimbledon, la Serbe a remporté cinq matches et perdu six fois. La thérapie de choc des banques centrales n'apaise pas la fièvre boursière

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Un vent de panique a soufflé à nouveau mercredi sur les Bourses mondiales qui ont poursuivi leur plongeon entamé lundi, malgré la baisse surprise des taux directeurs des grandes banques centrales et un plan de choc qui revient à une nationalisation partielle des banques britanniques.
La dégringolade a été accentuée par les sombres perspectives du Fonds monétaire international (FMI) pour l'économie mondiale, annonçant un coup d'arrêt brutal à la croissance, qui n'atteindrait que 0,1% aux Etats-Unis et 0,2% dans la zone euro l'an prochain.
"Reprenez vos esprits", a lancé le président de la Banque centrale européenne (BCE), Jean-Claude Trichet, en direction des marchés financiers. "Le pessimisme excessif est très mauvais conseiller".
Dans un geste sans précédent depuis les attentats du 11 septembre 2001, six banques centrales -- la BCE, la Réserve fédérale américaine (Fed) et leurs homologues suédoise, britannique, canadienne et suisse -- ont annoncé une baisse d'un demi-point de leurs taux directeurs. Au même moment la Chine a elle aussi annoncé une baisse du loyer de l'argent.
Autre mesure phare, annoncée par le gouvernement britannique: un plan de sauvetage des banques qui pourra passer par leur nationalisation partielle à hauteur de 50 milliards de livres (65 milliards d'euros).
Mais rien ne semblait pouvoir rassurer les investisseurs, affolés par la poursuite de la crise et ses répercussions sur l'économie, en dépit des initiatives des gouvernements, qui se sont multipliées depuis l'adoption vendredi aux Etats-Unis du Plan Paulson, doté de 700 milliards de dollars.
Wall Street a perdu 2% au terme d'une séance en montagnes russes, tandis que la Bourse de Sao Paulo, première place d'Amérique latine, a accusé une chute de 3,82%.
Auparavant, les Bourses européennes avaient clôturé en forte baisse: Londres a plongé de 5,18%, Francfort de 5,88% et Paris de 6,39%. En Asie, Tokyo a dévissé de 9,38%, une baisse historique, la plus forte depuis plus de 20 ans.
La thérapie de choc des banques centrales a été saluée par la France et l'Allemagne et, aux Etats-Unis, elle a fait l'unanimité, une fois n'est pas coutume, auprès des deux rivaux dans la course à la Maison Blanche, le républicain John McCain et le démocrate Barack Obama.
Toutefois, la baisse de taux décidée par la Réserve fédérale est insuffisante pour sortir les Etats-Unis de la crise, jugeaient mercredi les analystes.
Les mesures adoptées par le Congrès américain pour faire face à la crise financière commenceront à porter leurs fruits dans deux semaines et demie, a déclaré par téléphone le président américain George W. Bush à son homologue brésilien Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, selon des propos rapportés par un porte-parole de la présidence du Brésil.
Le secrétaire au Trésor américain Henry Paulson a déclaré que d'autres faillites d'institutions financières étaient à prévoir aux Etats-Unis malgré le plan de sauvetage des banques.
"Même avec les nouveaux outils du Trésor, certaines institutions financières vont faire faillite", a reconnu M. Paulson, qui a souligné que la patience était nécessaire face à des turbulences sur les marchés "qui ne vont pas se terminer rapidement".
Comme pour lui donner raison, la Fed a annoncé qu'elle allait fournir à l'assureur AIG, qui avait été nationalisé à la mi-septembre, 37,8 milliards de dollars de liquidités supplémentaires, après que ce dernier eût consommé une grande partie du prêt de 85 milliards fourni par la Fed.
L'euro a été dopé par la baisse des taux, valant 1,3660 dollar vers 20H40 GMT, contre 1,3599 dollar mardi soir. Les prix du pétrole ont reculé à 88,95 dollars, en baisse de 1,11 dollar par rapport à la clôture de mardi.
Les gouvernements restaient mobilisés sur tous les fronts pour renforcer le système bancaire et éviter un assèchement complet du crédit.

Former French president Jacques Chirac underwent successful surgery early Friday in Paris to implant a pacemaker, his office said.

The 75-year-old former leader was admitted to La Pitie Salpetriere hospital Thursday evening for the procedure that was scheduled several days ago following a routine checkup.

Chirac, who handed over to President Nicolas Sarkozy in May last year, is to return home at the weekend, a statement from his office said.

After 12 years as president, Chirac set up a foundation devoted to the environment, sustainable development and promoting understanding among cultures.

But he has also been placed under investigation for misuse of city funds dating from the time when he was mayor of Paris, from 1977 to 1995.

In 2005, he suffered a health scare when he was admitted to hospital for a week following what was described as a minor cerebral vascular accident.

He had recently received a warm welcome at the annual farm fair in Paris where he spent nearly four hours chatting with farmers and patting cows

PARIS, April 11 (Reuters) - The 30-strong crew of a luxury French yacht seized by Somali pirates a week ago were freed without incident on Friday but French troops later captured half the pirates, French military officials said.

France sent a warship and special forces to the region after the pirates seized the three-master in the Gulf of Aden last Friday and troops were standing by as negotiations to free the hostages took place on Friday morning.

The pirates had sailed the yacht, the Ponant, to the Somali coast, eventually mooring the vessel at Garaad, near the town of Eyl. French officials said earlier this week they believed the group was holding the crew only for ransom.

After the hostages were released and taken to a French warship, helicopter-borne troops tracked the pirates who had landed in Somalia and captured six, Jean-Louis Georgelin, head of the armed forces general staff, told a news conference.

The six, roughly half the pirate group, were being held aboard a French warship.

"The president expresses his deep gratitude to the French armed forces and all the state services which enabled a rapid and peaceful solution to this hostage-taking," French President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said in a statement.

It was billed by the Chinese authorities as “the harmonious journey,” but the Paris leg of the 2008 Olympic torch relay Monday did not go according to script, with protests, arrests and scuffles between pro-Tibet demonstrators and security officials disrupting the flame’s passage through the French capital.

Three times in the course of its 28-kilometer route through the City of Lights, the Olympic flame was extinguished by security officials and the torch was finally put on a bus for the final leg of the Paris relay.

After four hours of a chaotic journey through the streets of Paris, Chinese officials finally called off the relay, with the torch reaching the Charléty Stadium, on the southern edge of Paris, by bus.

Reporting from the Charléty Stadium, FRANCE 24's Lanah Kammourieh, following the relay, said the torch arrived “quite discreetly” at the stadium. “The torch arrived on a bus, and there were only some fireworks to signal that it had arrived at its final destination after a hectic day,” she said.

Following a pattern throughout the day, protesters at the stadium attempted to disrupt the proceedings, said Kammourieh. “One man tried to chain himself to the tramway right near the Charléty Stadium,” she said. “Other protesters attempted to unfurl a banner against the Beijing Games, but they were stopped by the police.”

Leftist Colombian rebels on Tuesday rejected a French humanitarian mission trying to assist hostages that include ailing French-Colombian Ingrid Betancourt.

France sent a jet with doctors and diplomats on board to Colombia last week in hopes of getting access to Betancourt, 46, who was said to be gravely ill.

"For the same reasons given the ICRC (International Red Cross) on January 17, the French medical mission is not appropriate and, moreover, is not the result of an agreement," read a statement from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas, issued through the pro-rebel Bolivarian News Agency.

The French mission is "the result of the bad faith of (Colombian President Alvaro) Uribe before the (French) government, and heartlessly mocks the expectation of the relativs of the prisoners," the statement added.

"We do not act under blackmail or under pressure from media campaigns," read the statement.

The statement claimed that if Uribe had cleared an area in southern Colombia earlier in the year, as the rebels requested, then Betancourt and the other hostages "would already have recovered their freedom, and it would have been a victory for all."

FARC guerrillas snatched Betancourt in February 2002 as she campaigned for the Colombian presidency.

The Olympic flame arrived at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport late on Sunday, an airport official said, ahead of a high-security tour through the French capital where campaigners are planning protests over China's human rights record.

The flame was welcomed China's ambassador to France, M. Kong Quan and former athlete Guy Drut, according to the airport official.

The flame was to be transported by a convoy of 40 motorcycles to a hotel in the city that has been surrounded by police.

On Monday, police plan to secure a perimeter of some 200 metres (yards) around the torch as it is carried in relay by 80 runners on a 28-kilometre (18-mile) route through Paris from the Eiffel Tower to a stadium in the south of the capital.

The torchbearers will be protected by a cordon of 65 motorcycle police, 100 firemen, another 100 police on roller blades and nearly 50 vehicles with more than 200 riot police.

On Sunday, the torch made a chaotic trip through London, where police battled to keep pro-Tibet protesters away from the flame and made 37 arrests.

France has made contact with pirates holding a luxury French cruise yacht with around 30 crew off the coast of Somalia, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said in a radio interview Sunday.

"We've made contact and the matter could last a long time," Kouchner told France Inter. "Our contact needs to be fruitful and we have to do everything to avoid bloodshed."

He did not rule out the payment of a ransom to secure the release of the crew -- 22 French nationals and around 10 Ukrainians.

The French military kept up its surveillance of the hijacked vessel as it was taken toward a pirate lair off northeast Somalia, officials said earlier.

Defence Minister Herve Morin said there could be no military intervention unless the safety of the crew could be guaranteed.

Any order to launch a military operation "cannot be taken unless there is certainty that this will happen in secure conditions that preserve the integrity of the crew," he said.

Somali officials said that the 32-cabin yacht, the Ponant, was seized on Friday

Since then a dozen pirates had stayed on board and it had travelled more than 400 kilometres (249 miles) south, along the Somali coast.

Colombia's president said Tuesday he had approved a French mission to try to meet with hostages held by leftist rebels, including gravely ill politician Ingrid Betancourt.

The mission would be "to protect the deteriorating health of the hostages," President Alvaro Uribe said.

Betancourt, who holds both French and Colombian nationality, is being held along with dozens of other hostages by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia or FARC.

In Paris, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he had called Uribe to inform him France was sending a humanitarian mission "without delay to contact the FARC and obtain access to our compatriot," his office said.

Uribe said once Colombia's military has the co-ordinates of the location for any meeting between the French delegation and the rebels, it will temporarily suspend military operations in the zone.

Earlier Tuesday, Sarkozy implored the rebels in a televised message to free Betancourt, whom he said was in danger of dying. Betancourt, who has spent six years in captivity, is said to be suffering from Hepatitis B and a skin disease.

In a televised message to rebel leader Manuel Marulanda, Sarkozy said the latest information about the health of Betancourt is "profoundly alarming."

"Ingrid is in danger of imminent death," Sarkozy said. "Since only a decision from you to save this woman from death is needed … Take this decision. Free Ingrid Betancourt."

The rebels want to swap Betancourt, 46, and dozens of other hostages, including three U.S. defence contractors, for all FARC rebels imprisoned in Colombia and the United States.

The famed revolution of May '68 began with university students but spread far beyond, changing the fundamentals of French society and culture. With the 40th anniversary of the revolts nigh, some ask whether their legacy continues.(Report: J.Jackson)

Today, there remain persistent symbols of the demonstrations that took France by storm in May '68. One of these is Daniel Cohn-Bendit, currently president of the European Green Party. In January 1968, he called upon the then Minister for Youth and Sports to inaugurate the swimming pool at the University of Nanterre, in the slums of the Parisian suburbs. The minister objected to the prospect of a pool open to both sexes. “If you’re having sexual needs, go take a cold shower,” said the minister.

This anecdote reveals the social climate that motivated thousands of students to take to the streets. The commonly accepted date for the beginning of the revolt is March 22, when a group of students took over the Nanterre campus. This “March 22nd movement” evolved into the May ‘68 protests

Filmmaker Romain Goupil, who was in high school at the time of the revolts, told FRANCE 24, “At Nanterre, we demanded the liberation of a student arrested for participating in an anti-Vietnam protest.” He goes on to say that his most vivid memory of the time was “the unbelievable battle of the famous night of the barricades. It was like the revolutions of 1848. We were spiritual descendants of a revolutionary history.”

May 68, as controversial as ever

After the March 22 movement, classes were suspended in Nanterre until April 1 to avoid further trouble. Students retreated to a large amphitheatre in the Sorbonne. On May 3, the Sorbonne was forcibly evacuated. The violent incidents that followed that night resulted in 600 arrests.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of these events.

Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie had called the March 2 attack an "ambush" on officers responding to a call about vandalism. About 30 people, some armed, were waiting for the officers. Three police were hit in face with buckshot while another was hospitalized after being hit in the leg with buckshot and nails, officials said.

The interior minister noted her "determination to never leave unpunished aggressions against police officers, particularly when committed with firearms."

The sweep recalled a similar, though much larger, operation last month in Villiers-Le-Bel and neighboring projects north of Paris, in which 35 people were detained in connection with riots that broke out there in November after two teenage boys were killed in a motorbike crash with a police car.

Of the 130 police officers injured in the violence, at least 10 were hit by buckshot or pellets.

PARIS: Opening the Paris Book Fair should have been a low-key cultural event during the state visit to France of President Shimon Peres of Israel. Instead, it was charged with Middle East tensions.

Several Arab countries are boycotting the prestigious annual fair, where Peres was speaking Thursday, because it honors Israeli writers.

The Nobel Peace laureate's appearance at the book fair comes near the end of his five-day state visit to France - a sign of President Nicolas Sarkozy's effort to rebuild frayed ties with Israel.

"I am against the boycott of books," Peres said Wednesday. "Books are written to awaken reflection, to try to make sense of ideas."

Sarkozy's spokesman called for calm.

"It is not books that we should fear," David Martinon said at a news conference Thursday.

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization urged its 50 member nations to boycott the fair, saying Israel should not be honored at a time of "siege" against the Palestinian people.

The Moroccan-based organization said last month that it had urged the boycott to protest against Israel's actions against Palestinians.

"The crimes against humanity" that Israel is perpetrating in the Palestinian territories "constitute, in themselves, a strong condemnation of Israel, making it unworthy of being welcomed as a guest of honor," the group said in a statement.

EU leaders approved a controversial French proposal for a Mediterranean Union aimed at strengthening cooperation with countries from Morocco to Turkey, the EU's Slovenian presidency said Thursday.

"The project received wide support," Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa told reporters after the first day of an EU summit in Brussels.

"It is now a question of working on this in different forums. It's now a question of doing what is needed so that this project can see the light of day," he said.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy raised the plan during last year's election campaign, but complaints from Germany saw the grand project watered down.

Germany had feared that he would try to use it as a counter to Berlin's growing influence in central Europe as the EU expands, by limiting the club to southern European countries.

"Tomorrow morning, the decision will be formally taken to transform the Barcelona Process into a Union for the Mediterranean. That was decided unanimously tonight," Sarkozy said at a separate press conference.

Launched in 1995 as a framework for political, economic and social ties, the Barcelona Process has regularly been thwarted in its aims by confrontations between Israel and Arab countries.

French voters went to the polls on March 9 in the first round of local elections. The Socialist Party emerged victorious, while President Sarkozy's UMP Party lost support. The final round of voting takes place on March 16.

On March 9 the French voted in the first round of municipal elections, choosing local councillors and mayors in the country's 36,783 municipalities - from the tiniest village to big cities. Since 2001, nationals of the other 26 EU member states can also take part in this election.

Exit polls showed the opposition Socialists well-placed to score big gains over Sarkozy's Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), in next Sunday's decisive second round of a vote cast as a referendum on his presidency.

Nationwide, left-wing parties took some 47.5 percent of the vote, well ahead of the UMP and its allies on 40 percent, according to a CSA survey. Turnout was high, estimated at close to 70 percent.

The final round of voting takes place on March 16.

Cemetery full, mayor tells locals not to die

The mayor of a village in southwest France has threatened residents with severe punishment if they die, because there is no room left in the overcrowded cemetery to bury them.

In an ordinance posted in the council offices, Mayor Gerard Lalanne told the 260 residents of the village of Sarpourenx that "all persons not having a plot in the cemetery and wishing to be buried in Sarpourenx are forbidden from dying in the parish."

It added: "Offenders will be severely punished."

The mayor said he was forced to take drastic action after an administrative court in the nearby town of Pau ruled in January that the acquisition of adjoining private land to extend the cemetery would not be justified.

Lalanne, who celebrated his 70th birthday on Wednesday and is standing for election to a seventh term in this month's local elections, said he was sorry that there had not been a positive outcome to the dilemma.

"It may be a laughing matter for some, but not for me," he said.

France is trying to clean up its act, readying measures this week aimed at reversing its image as environmental laggard and making it a pioneer in the fight against global warming and other threats to the Earth's well-being.

Yet environmental groups fear the measures, to be finalized at a conference Wednesday and Thursday, will be too watered down to make a difference in France's carbon emissions and have little impact on worldwide efforts to reduce the pollution that is warming the planet.

President Nicolas Sarkozy isn't letting those fears slow his push to raise France's eco-profile.

He put global warming high on his agenda after his election in May, creating Europe's most powerful environment ministry and berating the United States for its resistance to emissions cuts. At the United Nations, Sarkozy urged developed countries and major polluters to commit to a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2050.

Tough Sell: An American Yogurt in Paris

The Danone Group has enjoyed great success by selling French yogurt to Americans. Now the company is turning to an American to introduce organic yogurts in Europe, starting in France, a country that doesn’t normally look across the Atlantic for culinary advice.

Gary Hirshberg, the head of Stonyfield Farm, has built a yogurt empire by tirelessly promoting the virtues of organic food. Now that Stonyfield’s parent company, the Danone Group, has asked him to take his show on the road, he is about to see how well his message translates.

“It’s obviously very audacious to go to France and talk about improving their food offerings,” he said.

But at the insistence of Danone’s chairman and chief executive, Franck Riboud, Mr. Hirshberg introduced a line of products in September meant to tap into the growing demand for organic food in France, particularly in urban markets. The yogurt, called Les 2 Vaches des Fermiers du Bio (the two cows of organic farmers), comes with chatty cartoon cows on the packages and a Web site full of thoughts about planetary health.

PARIS, May 7 — Two days before the first round of the presidential election last month, Nicolas Sarkozy donned a red checked shirt, jeans and cowboy boots, mounted a small white horse named Universe and rode around the Camargue country in France’s deep south. A gaggle of reporters and cameramen followed him in a cart pulled by a tractor. The black bulls in the nearby pasture stayed away.

“A vague resemblance to the look of George W. Bush on his Texan ranch,” is how the left-leaning newspaper Libération described Mr. Sarkozy, who was elected president on Sunday, beating the Socialist candidate Ségolène Royal in a runoff. The newspaper dismissed the event as a media stunt, saying, “Everything for the image, right up until the last minute.”

Mr. Sarkozy is unabashedly pro-American, a man who openly proclaims his love of Ernest Hemingway, Steve McQueen and Sylvester Stallone and his admiration for America’s strong work ethic and its belief in upward mobility.

PARIS, April 26 — No matter who wins the presidency of France on May 6, life in the grand, presidential Élysée Palace is destined to change.

There is no future for the role of dutiful partner filled for the past dozen years by Bernadette Chirac, who as first lady has run charities, held dinners and served as a local official in the farming area of Corrèze.

Both presidential candidates are members of unconventional couples.

Ségolène Royal, the Socialist Party candidate, is not married to the father of her four children, François Hollande. But more than that, they are potential political rivals. As head of the Socialist Party, he was nearly the candidate himself, and says he will try to run in 2012 if Ms. Royal loses this time.

“Certainly, without doubt,” he said Wednesday in an interview on a train from Paris to Nantes. “It’s also a competition between us.”

He added that even if Ms. Royal won the election, he would not be joining her in Élysée Palace for her five-year term.

“I am not the one who is going to be elected,” he said. “If Ségolène Royal wins, my situation doesn’t change. It is Ségolène Royal who has a great responsibility and has to decide what is the best way of exercising it — including where she lives.”

This is not Bill-and-Hillary in 1992, when Bill Clinton told the American people they would be getting “two for the price of one,” pledging that Mrs. Clinton would be a full-time policy-making partner, and perhaps even a cabinet member, in his presidency.

“In France, you don’t need two, you need one,” Mr. Hollande said. “My role is not to be a co-candidate with Ségolène Royal. The candidate must be free and responsible. My role is to help the candidate — but as party secretary, not my private capacity.”

Cécilia Sarkozy, 49, the wife of the front-runner and conservative candidate, Nicolas Sarkozy, has been largely absent from the campaign. Asked how she envisioned her life in 10 years, she replied, “In the United States, jogging in Central Park.”

PARIS, April 25 — The defeated “third man” in the race for the French presidency seems to be calling the shots ever since he lost on Sunday.

On Wednesday the candidate, François Bayrou, who won 18 percent of the vote in the first round and has been aggressively courted by both the Socialist candidate, Ségolène Royal, and the conservative front-runner, Nicolas Sarkozy, held a one-and-a-half-hour news conference where he unleashed a torrent of criticism against both candidates and refused to endorse either of them.

In a sign that Mr. Bayrou intends to retain some influence in the contest, he said he would accept an invitation from Ms. Royal for a public debate before her May 6 runoff against Mr. Sarkozy.

Ms. Royal reacted by proposing that Mr. Bayrou join her Friday when she meets the regional press, but appeared to back away when he insisted the debate be televised.

The campaign entered a new phase on Monday, as the winners of the first round, Nicolas Sarkozy on the right and Ségolène Royal on the left, began a battle for the 6.8 million voters who chose the path down the middle.

Taken together, the two winners scooped up 57 percent of the vote in the first round on Sunday. But François Bayrou, the legislator and farmer who heads the centrist Union for French Democracy, came in a strong third with more than 18 percent of the vote, and those votes are up for grabs.

PARIS, April 10 — Nicolas Sarkozy, the conservative candidate for president, suggests that pedophilia is most likely a genetic flaw; Ségolène Royal, the Socialist, does not seem to know that Taliban extremists are no longer running the government of Afghanistan; and Jean-Marie Le Pen, the ultrarightist, recommends masturbation instead of free condoms to meet young people’s sexual needs.

With 12 days to go before the first round of France’s presidential election, the campaign has entered a phase of improvisation and even silliness that reflects the absence of any single defining issue and a frenzied competition to win over the country’s large bloc of undecided voters.

Every twist seems important. Monday was the “official” opening of the French campaign, in which all 12 candidates put up campaign posters across the country and began broadcasting short prepared free spots, of exactly the same length, on state-run television and radio stations.

But a record 42 percent of French voters say they are undecided or can still change their minds, according to a recent survey by the CSA polling institute published in Le Parisien on Sunday. Among voters under the age of 30, the percentage is even higher, at 56 percent.

French Luxury Retailer Makes a Friendly Bid for Puma

FRANKFURT, April 10 — The French luxury goods retailer PPR bid about $7 billion on Tuesday for Puma, the German sporting goods company, promising to keep its chief executive, Jochen Zeitz, at the helm of the company he turned around.

The question is whether Puma investors will continue to show the same confidence in Mr. Zeitz, who emphatically endorsed the deal, and sell their shares to PPR, or whether they will resist and put Europe on course for yet another cross-border takeover battle.

PPR, famous for its Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent brands, said it had acquired a 27.1 percent stake in Puma for 1.4 billion euros ($1.87 billion), and that it would offer 330 euros ($441) each for the remaining shares, valuing the company at $7.08 billion. But the share price rose 29.68 euros ($40), or 9.4 percent, on Tuesday to 343.93 euros ($460) on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and some bankers were already recommending that shareholders reject PPR’s offer.

HVB, a unit of UniCredit, advised investors to hold out. Uwe Weinreich, an analyst at the Munich bank, said that he expected the share price to rise to 400 euros ($535).

Mr. Zeitz will face investors on Wednesday at Puma’s annual shareholders’ meeting.

“It will not be easy,” said Roland Könen of Bankhaus Lampe in Düsseldorf. “Questions will come about whether the offer is fair.”

Mr. Zeitz took over Puma 14 years ago at the age of 30 and has transformed it from an unprofitable manufacturer of track-and-field clothing into a designer of trendy sportswear. As Mr. Zeitz reminded shareholders in a letter this year, the value of the company has risen 4,300 percent during his tenure.

But European investors have rejected other deals recently, as this decade’s fast economic growth makes them more vocal and confident. For example, E.On, the German energy giant, last week abandoned its yearlong attempt to acquire its Spanish counterpart, Endesa, in part because shareholders held out for a higher price.

Opposition to Electronic Voting System Grows in France

PARIS, April 3 — For France’s Socialists, among others, the coming presidential election could descend into a nightmare like last fall’s in Florida.

This is the first presidential election in France to use paperless computer voting. As many as 1.5 million of the 44.5 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots electronically in more than 80 municipalities around the country.

But with election day less than three weeks away, opposition to the electronic voting machines has grown, in part because a small percentage of them are made by the same American company whose machines were involved in a bitterly disputed Congressional election in Florida last November.

“We have doubts about the reliability of these machines,” Gilles Savary, a spokesman for Ségolène Royal, the Socialist Party candidate, said in an interview. “I don’t want to lecture America. But we don’t want France to fall into the same Kafkaesque balloting as happened in the United States.”

Last week, the Socialist Party called for a moratorium on using the machines until their reliability could be determined. The party also wants a debate on the issue in Parliament.

“The fear shown by numerous voters faced with a system they don’t know runs the risk of keeping them away from the polls,” the Socialist Party said in a communiqué on Friday, adding that the risks of fraud and of “massive and undetectable errors” are very real.

French Train Hits New World New Speed Record

ON BOARD TGV V150, eastern France (AFP) - France's TGV train set a new world speed on rails Tuesday, hitting 574.8 kilometres (357.2 miles) per hour on a stretch of track in eastern France.

The experimental version of the Traine a Grande Vitesse (TGV), equipped with two supercharged locomotives and extra-large wheels, easily beat the 515.3 kph set by a TGV in 1990.

FRANÇOIS JOUSSE paced along the south roof of Notre-Dame, chain-smoking French cigarillos as he waited for darkness to fall.

Suddenly, the southern facade of the cathedral lit up, its pillars, gargoyles and flying buttresses adorned in white.

“Ah, this gives me such great pleasure!” he said, warming his hands in one of the spotlight canisters. “I truly am blessed with the most splendid job.”

Indeed, Mr. Jousse, a 64-year-old engineer, is the troubleshooter for the City of Light. As chief engineer for doctrine, expertise and technical control, he is responsible for lighting 300 of the monuments, official buildings, bridges and boulevards of the French capital.

Working with a staff of 30 decorative lighting specialists at a City Hall annex, Mr. Jousse helps create new lighting projects, lectures experts, negotiates with powerful players like the Roman Catholic Church and resolves technical problems at sites throughout the city.

One recent evening, Mr. Jousse was summoned urgently to an alleyway filled with garbage in a gritty neighborhood in the 19th Arrondissement. He had tried to mount a projector to shine one of his creations — images of six decorative windows he had photographed — onto a bare concrete wall there.

One was half-opened, with a red drape; another showed the silhouette of a black cat from an iconic late 19th-century poster

But the images needed to be enlarged to match the real windows nearby. The deputy mayor of the neighborhood wanted the wall ready for Christmas. After a struggle to mount a different lens, he settled on a temporary compromise: the windows were enlarged, but two of them had to go because the existing lens could accommodate only four of that size.

PARIS (AFP) - France became the first country to open its files on UFOs Thursday when the national space agency unveiled a website documenting more than 1,600 sightings spanning five decades.

The online archives, which will be updated as new cases are reported, catalogues in minute detail cases ranging from the easily dismissed to a handful that continue to perplex even hard-nosed scientists.

"It is a world first," said Jacques Patenet, the aeronautical engineer who heads the office for the study of "non-identified aerospatial phenomena."

Known as OVNIs in French, UFOs have always generated intense interest along with countless conspiracy theories about secretive government cover-ups of findings deemed too sensitive or alarming for public consumption.

"Cases such as the lady who reported seeing an object that looked like a flying roll of toilet paper" are clearly not worth investigating, said Patenet.

But many others involving multiple sightings -- in at least one case involving thousands of people across France -- and evidence such as burn marks and radar trackings showing flight patterns or accelerations that defy the laws of physics are taken very seriously.

A phalanx of beefy security guards formed a barrier in front of the space agency (CNES) headquarters where the announcement was made, "to screen out uninvited UFOlogists," an official explained.

Of the 1,600 cases registered since 1954, nearly 25 percent are classified as "type D", meaning that "despite good or very good data and credible witnesses, we are confronted with something we can't explain," Patenet said.

On January 8, 1981 outside the town of Trans-en-Provence in southern France, for example, a man working in a field reported hearing a strange whistling sound and seeing a saucer-like object about 2.5 meters (eight feet) in diameter land in his field about 50 meters (yards) away.

A dull-zinc grey, the saucer took off, he told police, almost immediately, leaving burn marks. PARIS, March 21 — Setting aside his personal feelings for the sake of his party, Jacques Chirac on Wednesday endorsed his longtime younger rival, Nicolas Sarkozy, as the person best suited to succeed him as president of France.

The long-awaited endorsement came without fanfare, passion or enthusiasm. The two men did not appear together at Élysée Palace or on a campaign podium.

Instead, Mr. Chirac announced his decision in a short televised statement from the palace after meeting with Mr. Sarkozy. Mr. Chirac portrayed it in terms of loyalty to the governing party, which he founded in 2002 — the Union for a Popular Movement, known by its French acronym, UMP — not as a personal embrace of the candidate.

PARIS, Mar. 12 — Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin on Monday formally endorsed his political rival, the center-right candidate Nicolas Sarkozy, for president.

“Today I am with Nicolas Sarkozy to defend the ideals of our political family and so that the choice for the French people is as clear as possible,” Mr. de Villepin told Europe 1 radio a day after President Jacques Chirac announced that he would not seek a third term.

He added, “We have been together in government; we will be together in this battle.”

The endorsement is important because Mr. de Villepin, who once had been considered a potential presidential contender, put party unity ahead of the personal and political differences he has had over the years with Mr. Sarkozy, who is the interior minister and the head of the governing party, the Union for a Popular Movement.

In the past, for example, Mr. de Villepin has criticized Mr. Sarkozy’s proposal to institute a modest limited affirmative action program for France, which Mr. de Villepin believes runs counter to the republican ideal that ignores race, religion and ethnicity.

And although Mr. Sarkozy, like Mr. Chirac and Mr. de Villepin, opposed the war in Iraq, he has criticized the two men for the way they conducted diplomacy with the United States before the war, calling France’s attitude “arrogant.”

Mr. de Villepin had earlier said he would announce his choice for president only after Mr. Chirac did so.

Mr. de Villepin becomes the third of Mr. Chirac’s prime ministers to endorse Mr. Sarkozy, following the lead of two former prime ministers, Jean-Pierre Raffarin and Alain Juppé.

Reacting to the endorsement from a campaign stop in the town of Maulte, Mr. Sarkozy said: “I have been very moved by his support and the way in which it was made. It was without ambiguity, very sincere.”

PARIS, March 11 — After more than four decades as a politician and a dozen years as president, Jacques Chirac announced his retirement from politics on Sunday, but he did not endorse Nicolas Sarkozy, the presidential candidate and leader of the party Mr. Chirac founded.

In a brief and deeply personal address to the nation carried on television and radio, Mr. Chirac said he would not seek a third term in next month’s election.

“At the end of the mandate you have conferred on me, the moment will have come for me to serve you in another way,” Mr. Chirac said. “I will not ask for your votes for a new mandate.”

PARIS, March 7 — In the final weeks of the French presidential campaign, dominated by a nurturing Socialist and a crime-busting conservative, a third candidate has upended the race with a very American theme: put partisanship aside and end the false promises of the big parties.

The candidate, François Bayrou, a 55-year-old politician, farmer and former classics teacher, is campaigning as the “neither/nor” option. Remarkably, the strategy seems to be working, in part because of rising disillusionment over the two main candidates.

The percentage of undecided voters is higher than before any presidential election in 25 years. Between 17 and 20 percent of voters say they will choose Mr. Bayrou in the first electoral round on April 22, according to France’s major polling organizations. Suddenly, he is a contender.

US author gets French citizenship

PARIS (AFP) - Jonathan Littell, the bilingual American author whose novel on the Holocaust "The Kindly Ones" was last year's literary hit in France, has been granted French citizenship, according to a notice posted in the official gazette.

The 39 year-old writer benefited from a clause in France's nationality code which allows the foreign minister to offer citizenship to French-speaking foreigners who "contribute by their outstanding work to spreading French influence."

Written in French, Littell's book -- the fictional memoires of a German SS officer on the eastern front -- has sold some 500,000 copies and won the 2006 Goncourt prize, France's top book award.

Before its success, Littell twice had his request for French citizenship turned down.

French Thinker Baudrillard Dies

French sociologist and philosopher Jean Baudrillard has died aged 77 at his home in Paris following a long illness. Baudrillard, a leading post-modernist thinker, is perhaps best known for his concept of hyper-reality. He argued that spectacle is crucial in creating our view of events - things do not happen if they are not seen. He gained notoriety for his 1991 book The Gulf War Did Not Take Place and again a decade later for describing the 9/11 attacks as a "dark fantasy". Baudrillard focused his work on how our consciousness interacts with reality and fantasy, creating from them a copy world he called hyper-reality. He said that mass media led to hyper-reality becoming a dominant force in today's world - an argument taken to a provocative extreme in his statement that the 1991 Gulf War primarily took place on a symbolic level. Since little was changed politically in Iraq after the conflict, all the sound and fury signified little, he argued.

PARIS, March 6 — What’s the price of a good name?
How about a cool $520 million?

That is the amount that Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, agreed Tuesday to pay to attach the Louvre’s name to a museum that it hopes to open in 2012. And there is more: in exchange for art loans, special exhibitions and management advice, Abu Dhabi will pay France an additional $747 million.

Controversy over the Louvre Abu Dhabi has been swirling in France for the last three months, with critics charging that the French government is “selling” its museums. But only now have the full details of the nearly $1.3 billion package been disclosed.

For Abu Dhabi, the deal is an important step in its plan to build a $27 billion tourist and cultural development on Saadiyat Island, opposite the city. The project’s cultural components include a Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, a maritime museum and a performing arts center as well as the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

For France the agreement signals a new willingness to exploit its culture for political and economic ends. In this case, it also represents something of a payback: the United Arab Emirates has ordered 40 Airbus 380 aircraft and has bought about $10.4 billion worth of armaments from France during the last decade.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi by the French culture minister, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, and the president of Abu Dhabi’s tourism authority, Sheik Sultan bin Tahnoon al-Nahayan. 2 Paintings by Picasso Are Stolen in Paris

PARIS, Feb. 28 — Two important paintings by Picasso estimated by the police to be worth a total of about $66 million have been stolen from the Left Bank home of his granddaughter Diana Widmaier-Picasso, the authorities announced Wednesday.

Paris police officials said the two oils, “Maya With Doll” from 1938 and “Portrait of Jacqueline” from 1961, were taken from Ms. Widmaier-Picasso’s house on the Rue de Grenelle in the city’s chic Seventh Arrondissement sometime overnight between Monday and Tuesday.

The police said that two drawings, one by Picasso, were also stolen, but this could not be confirmed by the Picasso family lawyer, Céline Astolfe.
In a telephone interview Ms. Astolfe said that Ms. Widmaier-Picasso and her mother, Maya, the daughter of Picasso’s longtime mistress Marie-Thérèse Walter, were asleep in the house when the theft occurred.

“They heard a noise, went downstairs and saw nothing,” Ms. Astolfe said. “They went to bed and the following morning they saw that two paintings were missing.”
The lawyer said the theft appeared to be the work of professionals because the home’s alarms were neutralized and there were no signs of a break-in. “They blocked the alarm, and they had either the code or keys,” she said.

Although the paintings formed part of the Picasso family’s private collection, they are nonetheless well known and, art experts said, would be difficult to sell on the open market. Ms. Astolfe said their value might exceed the police estimate.
“Maya With Doll” is a colorful Cubist portrait of Picasso’s daughter as a child clutching a doll, while “Portrait of Jacqueline” is a black, gray and white Cubist oil of Jacqueline Roque, Picasso’s second wife, whom he married in 1961.

Thefts of works by Picasso have become relatively common, not least because he was so prolific. London’s Art Loss Register lists 444 missing Picassos in its database, including paintings, lithographs, drawings and ceramics. There is also an active industry making and selling fake Picassos.

The artist’s descendants have had artworks stolen before. One famous theft involved pieces worth about $17 million, taken from the Cannes home of Marina Picasso, another of his granddaughters, in 1989. Those were later recovered. Seven Picasso oils stolen from a gallery in Zurich in 1994 have yet to be found.

Neither Diana Widmaier-Picasso nor her mother could be reached on Wednesday.
Like other members of the family they are active in studying and overseeing the artist’s legacy. Maya Widmaier-Picasso is often called on to verify questionable works attributed to Picasso, while her daughter, an art historian, recently published an illustrated book of Picasso’s erotic works called “Art Can Only Be Erotic.”
